Over thirty students in grades 6-12 attended the One Heart, One Mind Many Cultures Club’s celebration of Holocaust week, hoping to learn about the history of the Holocaust.
On Thursday, May 4, Director of Education at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Donna Rosenblum, spoke to students about the life of Irving Roth, a Holocaust survivor. She highlighted details of Irving’s life mentioned in his stories, and she spoke about the trauma and life-changing events that Jews had to endure during the Nazi regime. Rosenblum spoke on how every aspect of their lives were ripped away from them; their personal belongings, their dignity, and their freedom. Mrs. Rosenblum also focused on how people, during this time, had to assimilate into a whole new way of life and live in a world of diversity.
Junior, Givanny Cruz explained, “I find it interesting to learn about the traumas of the Holocaust.”
Givanny continued to explain that Mrs. Rosenblum placed in perspective human evil and the need to identify with victims of injustice and hate.
In addition, select sophomores were invited to explore the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove. Annually, these students have had the opportunity to speak with Holocaust survivors and listen to their testimonies.
Kellenberg’s Culture Club’s aim has been to immerse students and broaden their knowledge on the many different cultures throughout the world.
