On Saturday, November 2, Kellenberg’s newly formed Sailing Club competed in their first invitational regatta at the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay.
The Sailing Club had practiced three days a week in preparation for the regatta. Seniors John Renz and Marco Arena, Sophomore Mary O’Brien, and Squire Dylan Longobardi registered under the Interscholastic Sailing Association in order to compete. This regatta was especially significant since it was the first time the Kellenberg team has raced. Marco remarks, “I have been sailing my whole life and finally being able to sail as a part of my school was a really fun and awesome experience. I’m hoping the Sailing Club continues to grow.”
The race began with two students in one boat who sailed the course twice, then swapped with the next two students. The scores of these two fleets were then combined to determine the overall winning team. When asked about her participation in the regatta, Mary replied, “It felt rewarding to see the team come together and this regatta was a great learning experience for all of us. I look forward to another successful season!”
Kellenberg raced against St. John the Baptist, Oyster Bay, and Bay Shore. In the end, Kellenberg won second place overall with a total of 23 points. “On an absolutely beautiful fall morning in Oyster Bay, I was so impressed to see our students navigate the sailboat in the water with such success,” recalls Mrs. Frem.
The Sailing club has many exciting things coming up in the future, such as a boating course in the winter for students interested in receiving their boating license. The hopes for the club are to expand by helping students get their boating license and to bring in new members.
Kellenberg is extremely proud of the hard work of the Sailing Club and excited to see what it has in store for the future.
