Article by Phoenix writer Brooke Oldenborg ’26:
On Tuesday November 14, the One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures club and the PhoenixOnline Newspaper hosted a special event to write letters to penpals in the Our Lady of Nazareth Marianist Primary School in Nairobi, Kenya. Kellenberg has maintained a connection with this school for the past few years by sending letters to the students and even donating money.
Various members from the One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures club, PhoenixOnline Newspaper, and Model UN eagerly gathered together after school to participate. The meeting commenced with presentations from Fr. Daniel Griffin, S.M. and Brother Timothy Driscoll, S.M. about their trips to Kenya where they showed pictures of the children, school, culture, and animals that surround the locals every day. It was truly fascinating to see the way that those who are less fortunate than us manage to get by everyday with their community and God on their side. The Kellenberg students then responded to the letters from Kenya with their own letters.
PhoenixOnline moderator Mr. Flood said, “I think it was great to see so many kids show up to learn about the community we’ve been corresponding with for the last five years and to spend some time communicating in the old-fashioned way of writing letters!” Overall, it is truly a meaningful tradition that Kellenberg will continue for many more years to come.
