Article by Phoenix writer Michelle Paszek ’24:
Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is a story that almost everybody has heard about at some point or another. With so many film adaptations bringing this beloved Christmas story to life, the question of which one is the best has been asked time and time again.
PhoenixOnline sought to answer this question with a survey entitled “Which Christmas Carol Is It?” consisting of the choices: “A Christmas Carol” (1951) with Alistair Sim, “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” (1983) with Alan Young, “A Christmas Carol” (1984) with George C. Scott, “The Muppets Christmas Carol” (192) with Michael Cain, and “A Christmas Carol” (2009) with Jim Carrey.
One hundred fifty-five students, faculty, and parents answered this survey with Jim Carrey’s “A Christmas Carol” (2009) coming in first with 34.8% of votes and “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” (1983) in second with 22.6%. “A Christmas Carol” (1984) came in third, followed closely by “The Muppets Christmas Carol” (1992) in fourth, leaving “A Christmas Carol” (1951) in fifth.
As an added Bonus, PhoenixOnline attempted to answer once and for all the age-old Christmas season question: Is Bruce Willis’ “Die Hard” a Christmas movie? Well, our survey respondents answered with a big fat bah-humbug! In fact, the most popular response to the question was: “I’ve never seen it!” Sorry to all you die-hard “Die Hard” fans, but just because it takes place during Christmas, doesn’t make it a Christmas movie!
Merry Christmas to all and to all a Happy New Year!
