The Varsity Volleyball team captured the championship at the Smithtown West Tournament the weekend of October 19, posting huge wins over #1 ranked Massapequa in the semifinals and league rival, St. Anthony’s in the finals.
After seizing 1st place in their pool, Kellenberg cruised through the quarterfinal round vs. Westhampton, setting the table for the semifinal vs. powerhouse Massapequa. Emily Acimovic’s 5 aces and ridiculous .444 hitting percentage paved the way for the 2 set sweep and the trip to the championship.
When the match against St. Anthony’s locked up at 1 game a piece, the Firebirds jumped out to an early lead in game 3, thanks to crushing attacks from Rebecca Meier and Teresa Moulder and the defensive net play of Carly Kane and Reilly Minnigan. Perfect 14 for 14 service points from Julia Merz, coupled with the 13 digs from Krista Handler, put Kellenberg ahead to stay, capping off a 10 hour competition that catapulted the Firebirds to first place in a tournament that featured 16 quality teams from Nassau and Suffolk.
Most Valuable Player of the match was Maggie Caffrey, who ran the offense in all 13 games, chalking up 105 assists in the process.
