On May 22nd, 2024, the Health Sciences Club hosted an event along with LICADD (Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) about the importance of NARCAN, a nasal spray that can be used to save lives. Kellenberg sponsors a number of events held by LICADD during the school year including a Kickoff Dinner and the Angel Ball.
Mr. Chassman, the director of LICADD and a clinical social worker, spoke on the life-saving importance of NARCAN, and how to use it.
34 Health Sciences club members, along with Mrs. Finn and Mr. McCutcheon attended this event. This was a great opportunity that a lot of the students enjoyed, as they were very attentive to the presentation, even staying after to ask Mr. Chassman questions. This event was put together by Juniors Bianca Viteritti and Caitlin Hanratty.
Caitlin Hanratty has been in the Health Sciences Club since her freshman year. Her favorite part of this event was, “being able to speak to my peers about the fact that knowing how to use NARCAN is vital to keeping ourselves and the people around us safe.” Caitlin encourages everyone to join this club because of the, “interactive meetings, interesting speakers, and outside classroom education.” Caitlin wants to pursue a career in STEM as a chemical engineer, so this club is great for everyone, whether or not you are considering a medical career.
Bianca Viteritti had a great time participating in her first health science club event. Her favorite part was, “hearing Mr. Chassman go into depth on the importance of NARCAN. He knew exactly how to relate to our age group and connect with each of us. It was also very helpful to learn how each specific tool in the kit is used.” Bianca especially enjoyed the fact that Mr. Chassman is a clinical social worker, which is a potential dream job for her.
Mr. McCutcheon was inspired by the girls’ passion when it came to putting together this event. He says, “I was very proud of the students who participated in this training, for their enthusiasm and dedication in this life saving device.”
This was a great event and a very important learning opportunity for students. If you are interested in joining the health science club, contact Mrs. Finn.
