Varsity Softball’s Ava Golio, Natalie McMichael and Ariana Corrente joined in assisting the Nassau Aviators Wheelchair Softball team on Tuesday, May 30,in Eisenhower Park.
They were eager to aid in this game. The firebirds spent over two hours helping the athletes run a practice and play a slow pitch game.
Natalie and Ariana were placed to play on separate teams, while Ava pitched the entire game. While partaking in this game, the girls main goal was to bring as much fun to the day as possible. The attitudes of the players were truly admirable, as they were so incredibly positive regardless of the circumstances. Through their common interest in softball the girls were able to form bonds with each of the players.
During this game, a few rules were modified as they played with a larger ball and without softball gloves and despite the physical struggles of the players, they showed great talent and speed.
Ariana Corrente explains, “It was truly inspiring to watch the teams play and even play beside them. They are mentally and physically tougher than anyone I have ever met.”
This game was a major success for the firebirds and they are excited to participate in upcoming games.
Nassau Aviators Wheelchair Softball was founded in 2003 to help expand the world of sports within the disabled community on Long Island.
